Before his conversion, St. Augustine desperately searched for truth and the meaning of life in the ancient philosophies, in wealth, in social prestige, even in the immoral practices of time. However, in all these things, his heart was restless and his life unfulfilled. It was only when St. Augustine encountered Jesus Christ that he was able to know and then rest in the truth—the truth about God and the truth about himself. Only then was he able to proclaim, "My heart is restless until it rests in you, O Lord." We are made for God, and made to know and rest in his love and truth, and our souls long for the presence of God.
